Artist's interpretation
The painting Carnaval-6 from the Martinique Carnival series is a contemporary pointillist portrait based on a personal photograph taken during a trip to Martinique. It depicts three young women from Martinique participating in the carnival parade. The contemporary canvas, created with acrylics using vibrant brushstrokes and a texture achieved with a palette knife, is a true homage to the colors and culture of Martinique.
What inspired me in this portrait was, on the one hand, the gentleness of the figures, but also their gaze, captured in a fleeting moment. A gaze that perhaps conveys a moment of absence, hidden within the crowd intoxicated by the powerful rhythm of the percussion. People are so absorbed by the music that they don't notice this gaze lost in the tumult. This instant of solitude is concealed within the crowd, but it is ever-present and can be felt by those who know how to recognize it.
This painting also references Madras, a traditional fabric used in Martinique to make clothing and headdresses worn by women. The way the headdress is worn, as well as the number of points, also tells us about the wearer's status. For example, a headdress worn with a single point indicates singleness, while a headdress worn with two points, as illustrated for the central figure, indicates that she is taken but open to other offers. Three points indicate a married woman who is not open to offers.
