This contemporary figurative painting entitled "The Passing of Time" exudes an atmosphere of tranquility.
Artist's interpretation
Inspired by a travel memory from a visit to Paris, this painting, based on a personal photograph, depicts a scene unfolding during dinnertime in the Place du Tertre in the Montmartre district of Paris. The two figures playing chess are actually artists, seated slightly apart from the tourist activity, passing the time while waiting for the next customers. It's interesting to note the intensity and concentration of the players, dictated by the timer placed near the chessboard on a small, makeshift table. From time to time, the player in the blue shirt looks up to check if any customers are approaching their stalls.
I chose this title not only because it describes the scene well, but also because this painting was created during the pandemic, a period during which time suddenly seemed to stand still.
Technically, the painting was done with acrylics using a palette knife in a style inspired by pointillism . I used different types of gels, which allowed me to develop a texture that reinforces the coherence between the subject and the material.
