Here is the portrait of Gaël, a young African boy with a questioning and endearing gaze.

Interpretation of the artist

The first of twelve portraits of characters in the "Faces of Africa" series, there is something deeply endearing in the questioning gaze of the young African boy in this portrait. One cannot help but feel deeply moved by his vulnerability and fragility. Yet, one cannot ignore the strength and determination behind that look either. It is a look that reminds us that, despite the difficulties and trials of life, there is always hope.

The portrait of this young African boy is a contemporary pointillist interpretation of the traditional portrait. Rectangular strokes of bright colors have been juxtaposed and layered to create an effect of depth and texture. The size of the brushstrokes is larger than in classical pointillism, so this new painting language could be called "rectangularism".
