Interpretation of the artist
First of all, this painting is part of a mini-series of two portraits that represent a couple that is not to be missed in the world of sculpture: the portrait of the sculptor Auguste Rodin on the one hand, and the portrait of his muse Camille Claudel on the other. I was fascinated not only by their remarkable artistic career, but also by the tumultuous side of the couple and of course by the tragic fate of Camille Claudel at the end of her life.
I opted for a monochrome technique in the realization of the two paintings. For the portrait of Auguste, I chose the gold pigment of quinacridone nickel azo which is a color of a burnt orange tone that has a remarkable transparency allowing to develop a beautiful depth. This pigment translates well the flamboyant aspect of this colossal character.
To realize this portrait, I used a technique inspired by pointillism, using small strokes applied with a painting knife and in the most random orientations possible. The stacking of the brushstrokes also allows me to develop a superb texture on the canvas.
