This portrait transports us directly into the carnivalesque world of the Caribbean.
Interpretation of the work by the artist;
This painting is the third in a series of portraits entitled "Carnival of Martinique." This mini-series of identical, medium-sized canvases is inspired by travel memories of Martinique and focuses on some of the typical characters of the Martinican carnival. The figures are rendered in a pictorial language inspired by pointillism , interpreted in a contemporary way, where colors are essentially mixed on the palette and applied to the canvas individually, either juxtaposed or superimposed. This acrylic portrait , painted with a palette knife, depicts a woman participating in the red and black carnival parade. The figure is dressed as a red devil and wears a mask with horns and the devil's symbolic pitchfork. During this parade, every participant and spectator is encouraged to wear at least one item of clothing in red or black . I was inspired by the vibrancy of the colors, but also by the subtle interplay of light on the protagonist's skin. I tried to bring out the multiplicity of skin colours somewhat in the light of the pointillists while respecting shadow and light to give the illusion of reality.
