CContemporary pointillist portrait from the series of paintings Faces of Africa entitled Maliha
Artist's interpretation
This painting represents the portrait of a young African woman. I decided to execute this portrait because I was seduced by the expression on the face and more particularly by the intensity and determination of the gaze. In addition, the direct sunlight created beautiful areas of light and shadow in which it was possible to work on the expressiveness of the colors. The shadow areas show the subtlety of the reflections while the light areas betray the humidity and the ambient heat.
This portrait has been interpreted with a pictorial language inspired by pointillism, but in a contemporary way. The image is an assemblage of brightly colored, rectangular-shaped dabs of paint that are juxtaposed and superimposed in the most random way possible. Since the size of the brushstrokes is larger than in classical pointillism, we could speak of "rectangularism" to describe this new pictorial language.
As the portrait was painted with a spatula, a beautiful texture was also developed throughout the realization of the canvas. This is enhanced by the glossy finish applied at the very end of the work.
