Artist's interpretation

The painting Carnaval-6 from the Martinique carnival series is a contemporary pointillist portrait based on a personal photograph during a trip to Martinique. She evokes theportrait threeyoung women from Martinique participating in the carnival parade. The contemporary canvas made in acrylic with vibrant touches and a texture resulting from the spatula work is a true homage to the colors and culture of Martinique.

What inspired me in thisportrait is on the one hand the gentleness of the characters but also their gaze captured on the spot, A gaze which perhaps reflects a moment of absence which is hidden among the crowd intoxicated by the powerful rhythm of the percussions. People are so absorbed in the music that they don't notice this look lost in the tumult. This moment of solitude is hidden among the crowd, but it is always present and can be felt by those who know how to recognize it.

This fabric also refers to Madras which is a traditional fabric used in Martinique to make clothes and headdresses worn by women. The way the headdress is worn as well as the number of points also tells us about the status of the person wearing it. For example, the headdress worn with a single point indicates celibacy while the headdress worn with two points as illustrated for the central character indicates that she is taken but that she is open to other proposals. Three points indicate a married woman not open to proposals.
