The sweetness of thisportraitof clay character brings another dimension of the carnival of Martinique.
Interpretation of the work by the artist;
This canvas is the fourth in a series ofportraitsentitled “Carnival of Martinique”. This mini-series of identical medium format canvases is inspired by memories of trips to Martinique and centers around some of the typical Martinican carnival characters. The invoice of the characters uses a pictorial language which is inspired by thepointillisminterpreted in a waycontemporarywhere the colors are essentially mixed on the palette and applied to the canvas individually, either juxtaposed or superimposed. Thisportraitknife acrylicrepresents a female character participating in the carnival parade whose disguise simulates a clay figure. These clay figures have appeared in the carnival for a little over twenty years.
I was seduced both by the softness of the face, but also by the contrast of their posture and stoic attitude in all this carnivalesque din. This work is almost comparable to a monochrome work where only the play of shadow and light intervenes to define the character.
