This portrait transports us directly to the carnival universe of the Caribbean
Interpretation of the work by the artist;
This painting is the third in a series of portraits entitled “Carnaval de Martinique”. This miniseries of identical medium format canvases is inspired by memories of trips to Martinique and centers around some of the typical Martinican carnival characters. The invoice of the characters uses a pictorial language inspired by pointillism interpreted in a contemporary way where the colors are essentially mixed on the palette and applied to the canvas in an individual way, either juxtaposed or superimposed. This acrylic portrait with a knife represents a female character participating in the parade of the red and black carnival. The character is disguised as a red devil and wears a mask with horns and the symbolic devil's pitchfork. During this parade, each participant and spectator are invited to wear at least one piece of red or black colored clothing . I was inspired by the liveliness of the colors, but also by the subtlety of the reflections of light on the skin of the protagonist. I tried to bring out the multiplicity of skin colors a bit in pointillist light while respecting shadow and light to give the illusion of reality.
