Contemporary pointillist portrait from the series of paintings Faces of Africa entitled Nyah

Artist's interpretation

This painting represents a portrait of a young African woman in a contemporary pointillist style. I was inspired to create her and was eager to paint her beauty and softness. The figure is placed directly under the African sun, which creates beautiful light and shadows for the play of colors. This composition is harmonious in its use of color but also has some dissonant notes. The shadows give artistic depth and reveal hidden layers that do not appear at first glance.

The portrait is an assemblage of brightly colored, rectangular-shaped dabs of paint that are juxtaposed and layered in the most random way possible. Since the size of the brushstrokes is larger than in classical pointillism, we could speak of "rectangularism" to describe this new pictorial language.

The portrait being done with a painting knife (spatula), a beautiful texture develops throughout the work. This is enhanced by the glossy finish applied at the end of the work.
